"Grow your own drugs" was an exciting television programme, where the television presenter James Wong (an ethnobotanist), is demonstrating how to make some simple home remedies. The series was accompanied by a book, in which I had the privilege to contribute. The great thing about the television series and book, that these empowering of people at home, to take care of their own health and to make simple effective remedies, that are safe, For many conditions no pharmaceuticals are needed, or there is no need to go to the doctor. The World Health Organisation encourages the use and research into traditional remedies, knowing that most people in the world cannot afford the expensive pharmaceutical prescription, and herbal medicine can be an equal, if not better than the use of orthodox drugs. What is more simple than prevention of migraine with two fresh feverfew leaves in sandwich? What is more there is evidence that it can be very effective in doing so. Or what about a sage tea for sore throat. With the whole swine flu epidemic, people are aware that Tamiflu at the most just shortens the flu by one day, but one could think about alternative, what about the use here of Elderberries?

Elderberries have shown in clinical trials to reduce the days of the flu, and reduce the fever, and other symptoms of the flu. Here follows a recipe;

Elderberry syrup recipe;

100 g of dried elderberries

2 cinnamom sticks

900ml of water

450 g of sugar or honey

1. Put the elderberries and the water in a saucepan, and bring to the boil. Turn the heatlow and cover, simmer for 20 minutes,

2. reduce to 200 ml by taking the lid of and simmer verly slowly fo another 20 minutes.

3.Add the sugar, or honey, stirring all the time until it looks like a syrup, do not boil rapidly bu do allow to bubble just a little

4. strain through a sieve and pour in bottle.

For children use a teaspoon 3-6 times a day.

Ffor adult 2-4 teepson, 3-6 times a day.

Great to use for the flu and colds.

Simple medication, from kitchen or backyard, are great to use. Although at other times it is great to get a thorough assessment of ones health, and use the right kind of herbs for particular conditions, in those cases a book is not a real replacement for a professional herbalist, Herbalist in the UK are trained in University, where they get also clinical training in their training clinics.
